Why Do So Many People Hate Their Job?

In my work with teams around the world, many people tell me that they hate their job.

When I dig deeper to uncover the reason, I usually find that in reality they don’t hate their job. They hate the culture in which they have to do their job.

And many of these folks tell me they feel trapped - stuck with no other choice.

It is up to us, as leaders, to create a culture in which people can thrive. A culture where people can contribute their expertise, experience, and energy to deliver outstanding results.

  • We must build a culture of clarity - specifically regarding objectives and roles.
  • We must build a culture of trust.
  • We must build a cohesive team with a high level of collaboration.
  • We must recognize and reward people for their performance.
  • We must ensure our teams have a bias for action.
  • And we must genuinely care about the people we lead.

Most people will spend 90,000 hours of their life working - about one third of their life.

Are you creating a place where the team members you lead are engaged, excited and productive in the place they will spend one third of their lives?

Or do you get the feeling that the culture your team members are working in makes them want to be anywhere but there?

It’s up to us, as leaders, to build the right culture and it appears we have some work to do.
